Performing in the New World of Healthcare Reform

Learn about the UAM Action Network!

In April 2010, Congress passed and the President signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA). While the law remains a cause of debate, the reforms ushered in by this law have the potential to remake large parts of the U.S. healthcare system.

The PPACA legislation does not diminish the size of the task this country faces to pay for the increasing cost of healthcare for its rapidly growing Medicare eligible population. Private insurers still have the opportunity and the responsibility to be part of the solution to our nation’s healthcare challenges.

We at Universal American are proud that many of the principles in the healthcare reform law are embedded in the way we are now delivering care. Specifically:

  • Focusing on better clinical outcomes,
  • Reducing waste,
  • Getting our Medicare members as much care as possible, upfront,
  • Developing close and cooperative relationships with healthcare providers,
  • Supporting our providers in the care plans they create for our Medicare members, and
  • Paying our doctors not for the quantity of care they provide, but the quality of care they give to our Medicare members.

Assuring our members the most clinically appropriate services at the right time, and doing so in a way that improves the health outcomes for each member, is at the heart of what do.
