Disaster Preparedness

When floods, tornados or hurricanes strike, Medicare members are often left without access to necessary healthcare or medications, both routine and extraordinary.

Through our Health and Wellness Department, we help members with pre-disaster planning and post-disaster healthcare and counseling.

During times of disaster, we contact members identified as “high risk,” such as those suffering from chronic diseases. We help ensure the member has:

  • Appropriate shelter
  • Copies of all important medical documents
  • Access to our toll-free 24/7 Nurseline telephone number

Midwest Floods

When rising floodwaters threatened our members throughout the Midwest in the summer of 2008, we made nearly 2,000 calls to our members affected by the floods. Our trained case managers counseled members on decisions to evacuate, and conducted post-disaster health assessments and counseling services.

Hurricane Ike

With reports of a Category 4 hurricane heading directly for the Gulf Coast in 2008, we knew that many of our members would be in immediate danger. Before Hurricane Ike made landfall, we contacted nearly 6,000 members, confirmed evacuation plans were in place, and counseled them on the risks of “riding out” the storm. We also provided help and advice to ensure that those who were in need of long-term medical supplies secured them.
