Richard A. Barasch, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Richard A. Barasch has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Universal American since 1997 and has held positions with the company since its acquisition or organization. He is chairman of The Friends of the Bronx Leadership Academy, a member of the Board of Managers of Swarthmore College and a director of Turnaround for Children. A native New Yorker, Mr. Barasch is a graduate of Swarthmore College and Columbia University Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review.
Robert A. Waegelein, CPA, President and Chief Financial Officer
Robert A. Waegelein is currently President and Chief Financial Officer of Universal American. He joined the company in 1990. Previously, he was employed by KPMG Peat Marwick LLP in the accounting and auditing department, specializing in the insurance industry.
Mr. Waegelein is on the executive board of the Westchester-Putnam Council of the Boy Scouts of America and he is a trustee of Putnam Hospital Center. Mr. Waegelein is a certified public accountant and holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Amherst College and an M.S. in Accounting from New York University.
Steven H. Black, Chief Administrative Officer
Steve Black joined Universal American as Chief Administrative Officer in 2012. Steve has more than 25 years of operations, technology, healthcare and consulting experience. Most recently, he was with Radisphere National Radiology Group, the largest national radiology services provider, where he served as Chief Operating Officer. Steve has also held senior leadership roles at United Healthcare, Oxford Health Plans, Health Net Health Plans and PHS Health Plans. Steve also served over six years with Accenture, specializing in the insurance industry and operation improvement projects. He began his career with The Travelers as an Account Executive in the National Accounts Group. Steve has served on several volunteer executive boards for local sports associations including baseball, soccer and lacrosse. He received a bachelor's degree from Harvard University and an M.B.A. from Boston College.
Theodore M. Carpenter, Jr., Executive Vice President, Health Care Services
Theodore M. Carpenter, Jr. joined Universal American in 2005 and serves as Executive Vice President of Health Care Services. Prior to that, Mr. Carpenter was the Executive Vice President of Heritage Health Systems from 1999-2005. Earlier, from 1993-1998, Mr. Carpenter served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of North Carolina. From 1993-1998 and 1988 to 1992 Mr. Carpenter was Vice President of Operations for Kaiser's Northwest Region. Mr. Carpenter holds a bachelor's and M.S. degree in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University, and an M.S. in Health Services Administration from Harvard University.
Robert M. Hayes, Senior Vice President, Health Quality
Robert M. Hayes has served as Universal American's Senior Vice President for Health Quality since early 2009. Previously, he was President and General Counsel of the Medicare Rights Center. Mr. Hayes led the National and New York Coalitions for the Homeless from 1979 to 1989 and has practiced law with firms in New York and Maine, including Sullivan & Cromwell and O'Melveny & Myers. Mr. Hayes is a MacArthur Foundation fellow, has received honorary degrees from 10 colleges and universities, and has served as a member of the Commonwealth Fund Commission on a High Performance Health System. He is a graduate of Georgetown University and the New York University School of Law, where he was a member of the Law Review.
Erin Page, President, Medicare
Erin Page has served as Universal American's President of Medicare since March 2013. She is responsible for managing the company's Medicare Advantage business. Ms. Page joined Universal American in 2001 and has held jobs with increasing levels of responsibility, most recently as Senior Vice President, Market Operations, responsible for managing the Company's Texas and Southwest Medicare Advantage and Accountable Care Organization businesses. Prior to joining Universal American, Ms. Page's previous positions included regional management for a home health and durable medical company and Practice Management, engaging with physicians in Texas. Ms. Page has a bachelor's degree in Business Management.
Anthony L. Wolk, Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary
Anthony L. Wolk has served as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Universal American since July 2010. Prior to joining Universal American, Mr. Wolk served from 1999 to 2010 as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Centennial Communications Corp., a publicly traded telecommunications company. Previously, Mr. Wolk was an attorney in private practice with the law firms of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP. Mr. Wolk is a graduate of Lehigh University and earned his law degree with honors from the New York University School of Law and was a 2006 recipient of the NJBIZ Forty under 40 Award.
